Notes for Columbia & Venezuela Meetings

columbia demo image

This may be a decisive period for these two neighbouring countries. Talks between the Colombian government and the FARC guerilla movement continue to progress in Havana. There are hopes that if these are successful the benefits will include much greater safety for trade unionists, campesinos and human rights activists who suffer attacks and often murder from right-wing paramilitaries. Lilian Macer of UNISON Scotland will report on her recent visit with Justice for Colombia.

In Venezuela the elections in December gave the right-wing MUD coalition a majority in the National Assembly but it doesn't change the government of socialist President Nicolas Maduro. This will start a period of contest in which the right wing will do all in its power to continue acts of economic sabotage and to obstruct the government, which in turn intends to continue its radical social programmes. Already the MUD is seeking to privatise more than 1 million homes built for some of Venezuela's poorest families since 2012, leading to the street protests illustrated above (right). Dr Francisco Dominguez will provide detailed insight into the causes of the election outcome, the situation in Venezuela and the ways in which people in Scotland can help defend the extraordinary social progress made by the governments of Chavez and Maduro.
